The iRobot Roomba 980 is the most recent in the line of top-of-the-line robot vacuum cleaners that are an essential part of any modern household. This model is extremely powerful suction and a HEPA filter that can aid anyone who is concerned about allergies. It also comes with a powerful battery which can clean for two hours before returning to its dock automatically when the bin is full.
Smart mapping is another feature that allows it to identify areas of your home that require attention and creates an easy path to get around them. This technology is very efficient in navigating toys left on the floor or furniture legs sticking out underneath things. Roomba also has a sensor that snaps Roomba to its real-world location if it begins to wander away from its initial location.
iRobot also added a set of rollers underneath the Roomba that don't have bristles which makes them more likely to avoid the tangles that previous models. They're also a bit higher than the older rollers and can better fit under low couches and beds and are designed to let this model move more easily across different floor kinds.
The Roomba 980 is distinguished from other high-end models by its new dirt detection feature, which makes use of cameras to detect dirt embedded. This is a nice improvement over the previous model, which relied on a sensor-driven pseudorandom cover method to bounce around the room and clean it at least three times from different angles.
In our tests of its performance, the Roomba 980 did well on carpets and hard flooring. It scored extremely well on carpets with a low pile, and on mid-pile. best robot vacuum for hardwood floors did a decent job of picking up pet hair, but it struggled with very thick and long pet fur that was clumped together.
The Roomba 980 is still one of the best performing robots on our list despite the minor drawbacks. It's also not as expensive as other top-of the-line models. It's still packed with a variety of features that we'd like to see in a flagship model, but it doesn't have all the fancy app-enabled functions or smart home integration are found in other top contenders.
The iRobot Roomba is easy to set up and get running right away. After taking the yellow bin insert and the battery pull tab from its undercarriage you just plug it into the wall socket or one of its Home Base docking stations, press the "Clean button" and let it work. It will automatically return to its dock when its battery is out or is full of debris. It also has indicators at the top to indicate when the bin is full, it requires recharging or if its Wi-Fi signal has gone out.
